10 Nice Things You Can Do

Be neighborly. Take the time to establish good will with your neighbors. Everyone benefits when you feel safe and connected to others. Doing nice things makes your neighbors feel pleased, but it also makes you feel good about yourself

10. Favorite Flowers
Find out what flowers your neighbor really likes. Plant them in the border between your yards. You will both enjoy the flowers and your neighbor will consider you thoughtful and kind.

9. Guerilla Gardening
Practice guerilla gardening and surprise your neighbors. Go out in the middle of the night or get out early, before your neighbors are even up. Plant petunias in your neighborhood common areas. Plenty of flowers makes even drab communities look bright. OR slide a packet of flower seeds under your neighbor’s door.

8. Save the Trash Cans
On trash pick-up day, if you are home and your neighbors are not, carry in all your neighbors empty cans. It keeps the cans safe from blowing away and makes the streets and sidewalks neater.

7. Walkway Surprise
If you are the first one out after a winter snowstorm, go ahead and shovel your neighbor’s walk as well as your own. Even if they are capable of doing it themselves, they will be surprised and pleased.

6. Window Washer
Be the windshield wiper fairy. Grab a bottle of glass cleaner and wash the windows on your neighbor’s car as well as your own.

5. Favor the Pets
People love their pets. Give your neighbor a holiday gift for their dog or cat. You will be surprised how much your neighbor will appreciate the thoughtfulness.

4. Free Food
Find a buy-one-get-one-free deal at the supermarket? Pass the free item on to your neighbor. Consider it a pain-free sharing opportunity

3. Farmer’s Market
When you go to the farmer’s market, pick up a few extra vegetables to give away. Hang the bag on your neighbor’s doorknob for a surprise gift.

2. Barbecue Sharing
Throw a few extra pieces of chicken on the BBQ grill and take them to one of your neighbors who doesn’t have their own BBQ grill. Or, invite them to cook out when you have your grill going. Spontaneous mini-parties are known to happen!

1. Smile, Smile, Smile
Take a walk every evening and smile, wave, or greet everyone you see. Being friendly to others is the best way to connect.
Cultivate good neighbors by being one yourself. For some reason, in our society today, people often hold back from others. We don’t want to intrude, or we feel we’ll be rejected. However, most people are pleased when you do nice things for them. It builds goodwill and you might find your neighbors will be the ones in your life that go out of their way to help you.
