Baked Kale Chips

These are green and simply healthy. Kale is a true super food and the surprise is that it bakes

10 Simple Steps to a Healthy Snack

Greens, greens, greens! We all know that eating green vegetables is good for your health. Is it a struggle to get your kids or other loved ones to eat their vegetables? Vegetables as a healthy snack food may be the answer. Here are 10 simple steps to making Baked Kale Chips. Super delicious, crispy, and healthy—a snack you can indulge in.

1.   At the market, choose only kale that seems fresh, crisp, and green—no yellow spots or floppy, limp leaves. There are different varieties, such as red kale or dino kale, so you can have fun experimenting.

2.   Wash the kale thoroughly by placing leaves in a large bowl of water. Let the gritty sand drop to the bottom. Empty the water, fill, and repeat until there is no more grit.

3.   Dry the leaves completely. Use a salad spinner. Or place the leaves on dishtowel with another dishtowel on the top, pat dry. Or place the leaves in a large pan with paper towels over the top, seal the pan, leave in the refrigerator over night.

4.   Cut away the thick stems from the centers of the leaves.

5.   Cut or tear the leaves into pieces about 2-3 inches across.

6.   Lay the pieces out flat on a cooking sheet or pan. It’s important to bake them in a single layer so that they can crisp up, not steam.

7.   Drizzle 2 Tablespoons of olive oil over the top. Sprinkle with a small amount of salt.

8.   Preheat oven to about 325-350 degrees. Bake the kale for about 12 to 17 minutes. Kale should be crisp, with some browned edges. Be careful not to overcook. You may want to flip the chips once during baking.

9.   Let the chips cool completely ON THE PAN. Store the chips AFTER they have completely cooled down in a sealed container.

10.  Enjoy as a healthy snack food or serve at a party for a conversation starter.

More great ideas! You can flavor the chips for variety. Try sesame oil and sesame seeds. Or mix in ground Chipotle chili pepper in the oil. Try half oil, half soy sauce with cumin. Grate a fine lemon zest over the chips after they come from the oven. Experiment with your own favorite seasonings.

Kale can be found in the greens section at many supermarkets. You may be able to buy it at Farmer’s Markets, or find a source to buy Local produce. You can also make chips with other greens that are thick and firm, such as collard greens. Spinach not so much. Enjoy!
